Guji Uraga, Ethiopia

Guji is a premier coffee-growing zone in the Oromia Region of southern Ethiopia. The region is home to the Oromo people, whose distinct language and traditions contribute to the incredible diversity found within each woreda (district).

To meet the global demand for high-quality specialty coffee, new washing stations are being established throughout the zone. These facilities focus on precision processing to fully capture the complex flavor attributes unique to Ethiopian heirloom varieties. The region is nourished by the Ganale Dorya River and shares borders with the famous Yirgacheffe growing area to the west.

Terroir & Cultivation

Guji Uraga is a remarkably resourceful area, characterized by exceptionally fertile soil and a flourishing landscape.

  • Young Trees: Most coffee trees in this area are relatively young, resulting in vibrant cup profiles and high productivity.

  • Smallholder Traditions: Farming remains largely traditional. In the Solomo area, most farmers manage plots of less than 2 hectares.

  • Sustainable Intercropping: Farmers typically grow coffee alongside other food crops. This symbiotic method maximizes land use, provides natural shade for the coffee, and ensures food security for the producers' families.

  • The Community: This washing station supports 502 local producers, collectively cultivating 416 hectares of prime coffee land.
